The word translated ‘seated’ in Colossians 3 is ‘Kathemai’ which means ‘to sit down’. But it also means ‘to have a fixed abode’ and ‘to dwell’. So Jesus’ fixed address is right next to the Father. When we fix our eyes upon Him, we can’t help but see the Father and bask in all the authority resident in the kingdom of God.
Paul tells us in Ephesians 2:4-10 “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. God raised us up as He raised Christ up. We are seated with Him in the heavenly realms. How? By being in Christ. When we accept Christ as our lord and saviour we become one with Him. In the natural it is impossible for me to have part of me in one location and part of me in another, not without being in serious trouble. We are in Him. He is seated next to the Father. So are we!
The word in this text for ‘seated’ is ‘sugkathizo’. It means ‘together’ or ‘to cause to sit down together’. The previous Greek words indicated a singularity where this word indicates being corporate. We are together seated in heavenly realms. Our perspective as believers is to be heavenly, not earthly. The Message translates Colossians 3:2 as “Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ – that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective.” That’s where the action is!
Who doesn’t want to be where the action is? To see what is shaping world history and your life history get your focus up upon Jesus where it belongs. There is where the answers are. There is the hope and the security. There is the source of all our faith. Seated in Heavenly realms. Oh, yes, to be of any earthly good we have to be heavenly minded.
