What does that mean? It speaks of our hope and certainty of something we can’t see. But what does that really mean? Verse 2 of Hebrews 11 says: “This is what the ancients were commended for.” The ancients such as Noah, Abel, and Abraham were commended for their faith. They believed in the power of God to do exceedingly, abundantly beyond what we dare think or ask. (Ephesians 3:20)
The ancients believed that God created the universe and the whole world and everything that dwells within it. We are encouraged to believe the same way. Hebrews 11:3 says: “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.” It is so important to understand this if we are to see God move in supernatural ways in our lives. Faith believes that God formed the universe through His spoken word. Everything that surrounds us is formed from the spirit. This tangible realm that we live in is not as substantial as the spirit realm.
Because we live by our senses we think this is more concrete than the spirit. If people believe in the spirit realm, the perception, at least which I had, is the spirit is more like vapour or smoke. The spirit realm is something ephemeral without substance that can be lightly wiped away. This concept is often portrayed in movies where the good guy doesn’t take anything spiritual seriously but can defeat anything with a gun. This is the arena of wisdom called “common sense”. But common sense does not govern the spirit realm, faith does.
The Amplified Bible expounds on Hebrews 11:1 more adequately. “Now Faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things [we] hope for, being the proof of things [we] do not see and the conviction of their reality [faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses].” Wow! Faith is a confirmation of what we are hoping for. Confirmation is like applying for a position with a company or entrance to a programme and then getting a letter from them which states you have been accepted. You aren’t there yet, but the letter tells you that it’s yours for the taking. The Amplified calls faith the title deed. When you purchase a house, the solicitor will provide you with the title deed to the house, which states the house is yours. If you go to the house and find other people living there, you have the title deed that empowers you to demand they leave. The title deed gives you authority over what you have purchased as well as giving you an assurance that it’s yours. Faith gives you the title deed to what you are hoping for from God. It is the confidence that resides in your heart that you have what you have hoped for. It is unshakeable. You know that you know that you know you have it.
But faith doesn’t stop there! Faith is the proof of things we do not see and the conviction of their reality. Faith sees as real fact what the natural senses cannot perceive. Faith believes it before you see it. Common sense believe only what it sees. 2 Corinthians 5:7 states: “We live by faith, not by sight.” As believers we are to walk by faith. We are to walk in ‘God sense’. Yes, that will make us weird in the eyes of those who do not have faith in God but who cares? When we chose to follow Jesus we took a path that is not understood by human intellect.
God is still God. No matter what intellectuals and scientists tell you - God is God. And He responds to faith. Have faith in God.
