Psalm 75:6 No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt a man. 7 But it is God who judges: He brings one down, He exalts another.
To the arrogant God say boast no more. The psalmist recognizes the futility of exalting any man. Even self-exaltation is a waste of time and air. It is God who judges our hearts and subsequently our works. He determines the promotion or demotion of men.
Have you noticed in our modern society how people suddenly appear in the spotlight? They seem to come out of nowhere even though they have been laboring for years at their craft. As someone once said it took 25 years to become an overnight success. Equally these same people can fade or disappear from the glory circuit just as quickly. They go from being an A grade celebrities to B grade or oblivion and often no one in the public really cares.
Christian circles are similar. Suddenly there is a new teacher who is the one to hear. Their podcasts are a must hear. The revelation from them is the one to embrace. Their impact is profound, at least for a season. But then, they fade or disappear completely. Does anyone really care? Not really, there’s always a new star to be followed.
It is God who judges. He discerns and forms an opinion or conclusion about each of us. In Strong’s concordance the words “brings” and “down” means to humble. “Exalted” means to rise up according to the concordance. It is God’s determination and prerogative as the Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
So what does God base His decisions upon? According to scripture pride and humility are major factors in His determination. For example, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” (Proverbs 16:18) Both Peter and James write: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
Pride is dangerous as it often opens us to the snares of the enemy. The Lord looks for a humble heart attitude. It really can’t be all about us. As John the Baptist said I must decrease and He must increase. In our lives if we take such a position of humility we will find it doesn’t really matter if we are in the limelight or not. For it truly is all about Him.
Prayer: “Father check my heart and see if there is any pride or self-exaltation within me. Show me that I may humble myself before you; that I may walk in your grace and live life to the fullest in your presence. Amen.”
