Psalm 89: 15-16 “Blessed are those that learn to acclaim you, who walk in the light of you presence, Lord. They rejoice in your name all day long; they celebrate your righteousness.”
The word “acclaim” means to praise enthusiastically and publicly. The interesting aspect in this verse is that we learn to praise him. We all desire to do the will of God and in 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-18 we are told to rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Gods will for you in Christ Jesus. Our psalm says we are blessed when we learn to do that!
I know there are times in my life when I just don't feel like praising God and acclaiming Him. Nonetheless, this is the will of God for us. As we yield to Him and give Him praise something is released in us. You see praise lifts our focus from my issues and me to Him and His goodness. This takes us from the place of a worldly perspective to a heavenly perspective. On the one hand a situation may seem overbearing and impossible. Yet when we learn to praise him all the possibilities of heaven are opened and He makes a way where there is no way.
Such was the case for Paul and Silas in the Philippians jail. In the midst of a horrendous situation of being lashed, imprisoned and in stocks they began to lift their voices and praise God. I am certain their feelings had other ideas on what they would like to do. But Paul and Silas lifted above their feelings and acclaimed God publicly. The result was deliverance for them and salvation for others.
We need to take note of what to praise. This psalm says to rejoice in His name and celebrate his righteousness. We know that God is good, kind, compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. That I can praise. In him is no darkness. Every good and perfect gift comes down from him. So we praise Him because he is the author of life. We are not told to praise for the circumstances we are in.
We also celebrate His righteousness. It is because of him that I am holy, complete, and sanctified. I am righteous because of the finished work of Jesus. He took all my sin and now I stand in the power of His resurrection. I am righteous and holy because of him. And so I praise Him for all he has done and when I do I am blessed. Sound like a win - win for us!
Prayer: “Father I thank you that I am blessed when I praise you. I thank you for all you have done for me. I thank you for your goodness to my family and me. I am so grateful that you took all my sin and now I stand completely righteous in you.”
