Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth."
Verse 1 of the psalm is very comforting as we do experience trouble. The psalm talks of nations in uproar and kingdoms falling as well as earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis. Does this not sound like our world today? With ever-expanding media we are bombarded with bad news. Massive devastation through nature and the potential of World War III are broadcast 24/7, striking fear into our hearts. The presence of a caring and loving God are never mentioned, nor the thought of His intervention into the affairs of the earth.
Since the initial sin of Adam bad news has always predominated the thinking of mankind. Yet there is good news. God is an ever-present help in trouble. He is our strength and refuge. A refuge is a sheltering place or protection from danger. In the midst of the troubles that surround us we need to draw into Him and quiet ourselves.
1 Peter 5: 7-8 states: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”. All the news broadcasts cause anxiety, sometimes overwhelming, paralyzing anxiety. People are afraid to leave their homes because of anxiety. There is only one solution for anxiety and that is to cast it all upon Him. Cast is to fling something down or away. When you take junk to a recycling center there is no greater pleasure than flinging all of it into those massive bins. Do the same with the junk that is causing you anxiety by flinging it all upon the Lord. He’ll handle it. Our enemy – oh, yes, we do have an enemy – is roaring all the time like a lion trying to cause us to panic, to lose our head and to run from our protecting shelter.
Don’t do it! As verse 10 says be still and know that I am God. Turn off the news broadcasts, stop running around looking for worldly solutions and get into God. However, you get into God do it! Read your bible, pray, listen to worship music, listen to the word of God on audio recordings, be selective of the teaching and preaching you listen to. Not all preachers are speaking life and exalting the power of God, some sound just like the unbelieving media. Find your secret place in God and your perspective will change. He has not left us nor will He forsake us. He is in control. Amen!
Prayer: “Father, I confess I feel overwhelmed at the condition of the world. I trust your word and will be obedient to it. I cast all of my anxiety upon you. I cast all fear and desperation upon you. Fill me up with an awareness of your presence and love. Amen.”
