Psalm 50:23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honours me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God.
This verse is very clear in the benefit of thanking God even when it is a sacrifice. A sacrifice is made when it costs. When you sacrifice you give up something. As a parent you sacrifice your sleep in order to care for a baby. You usually get something when you sacrifice. This verse shows that thanking God triggers two outcomes, which result in an amazing consequence!
First, when you thank God, even when we don't feel like it or when it hurts, you honour Him! Honour is high respect and esteem. 1Samuel 2:30 says that those who honour me, I will honour. We are told to honour the Lord with our wealth in Proverbs 3:9 and with our bodies in 1 Corinthians 6:20. So there are various ways to show honour to The Lord. But here it is saying that if we thank Him we honour him!
Secondly, by thanking the Lord it says it prepares the way. When Jehoshaphat was faced with an overwhelming battle he sent out the singers in front of the army. As they went out they sang: "Give thanks to The Lord for His love endures forever". (2Chronicles 20:21b) As a result, the Lord set ambushes in the enemy's camp and they destroyed one another!
The consequence of thanking God is that He shows us His salvation! Salvation means preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. When you are in a difficult situation and need God to move on your behalf, thank him! In doing so you honour Him and prepare the way for Him to intervene.
Prayer: “Father I thank you for all your goodness to me. I thank you that in you I live and move and have my being. I thank you for my family, thank you that you love me, thank you that Jesus died for me. I am so grateful for all your blessings that you are my Shepard and I shall not want! Amen.”
