Psalm 52:8 But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God's unfailing love forever and ever.
There are three characteristics about the "olive tree" that this verse unveils. Firstly, the person attention and focus is on The Lord. Specifically, the focal point is on His unfailing love! God’s love is vital to life. When we truly know the love that God has for us we are never the same. 1John 4:16 says God is love and that we can rely on the love that He has for us. It's that simple. His love never fails according to 1 Corinthians 13:8 and in 1Peter 4:8 we read that love covers a multitude of sin.
Secondly, we see that the tree is flourishing. The word flourish means to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favourable environment. The result of flourishing is growth, prospering and increase. Psalm 92 says the righteous flourish and they will still bear fruit in their old age, they will stay fresh and green! That's good news!
Finally, we note the environment in which the flourishing takes place. Both in this Psalm and in Psalm 92 the fruitful ground is the house of The Lord. People were not created to be alone or God would have left Adam in the garden by himself. We need each other, the encouragement and strengthening that comes from fellowshipping together. We need the word to feed us so we can grow strong in faith. When we meet together we lift our eyes off our own issues and fix our eyes on Him the author and perfect or of our faith. This is the favourable environment we need to thrive.
Note the proclamation that David makes. He says I am... Let us declare this blessing over our own lives.
Prayer: “Father, I thank you that I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of The Lord. I thank you that I can rely on your great love for me because your love never fails! Amen!”
