Psalm 95:8 “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in Meribah, as you did in the day of Massah in the desert.”
There is nothing greater in life than hearing the voice of God. I remember hearing His voice for the first time. The words were profound, simple and life changing. I didn't hear an audible voice from the clouds but I heard it from within. It was the still small voice. I knew in my "knower" that it wasn't me but it was God. He said: “I love you!” Wow, the God of the whole universe loves me!! Truth is He loves you too and He has most likely told you so. It tenderizes the heart when you hear His voice.
Yet in this psalm it says if you hear his voice, do not harden your heart. Hebrews 3:12-15 repeats this and gives us a clearer explanation of how this hardening transpires. These verses say that sin’s deceitfulness and an unbelieving heart causes us to turn away from the living God. This causes a hardening in the heart and unbelief to seep into the mind.
The truth is we don't "fall into sin". James 1:14 says we are tempted and dragged away by our own evil desires and enticed. Then desire is conceived, it gives birth to sin. Entice is an interesting word. It means to attract or tempt by offering pleasure or advantage. In other words it appeals to our flesh. This is why in the Lord's Prayer it says lead me not into temptation but deliver me from evil. You can be tempted and not sin. But when enticement begins sin is knocking at the door. When we give ourselves over to enticement a hardening in our heart begins to take place.
The good news is that God never leaves us or forsakes us. In fact, even when we are faithless he remains faithful. He will continue to call, correct and convict us of our sin when we need it. God’s ways are not our ways. He will pour out his love upon us drawing us back to himself. That's why repentance is a gift. Repent means "to turn". So, when we are going our own way, his goodness leads us back so we can once again hear his voice, respond in faith and enter his rest.
Prayer: “Father, forgive me where my heart has been hard and I have walked in unbelief, been enticed and sinned. I repent and ask you to wash over me and fill me afresh with you spirit. Give me ears to hear what your spirit would speak to me today.”
