Psalm 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favour and honour; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.”
The first portion of this verse is a statement of who God is. He is a sun. Malachi 4:2 refers to the sun of righteousness rising with healing in its rays. This, of course, is speaking of Jesus the son of righteousness. Without the sun the earth would be a desolate place, cold and void of life. But the sun gives warmth, light and it produces the vitamins we require. So it is with the son of righteousness. He is the light and the life giver. In Him we live and move and have our beings. He is where our health comes from.
He is also a shield. He protects, cares and keeps us from all evil. We are told in Ephesians 6:16 to take up the shield of faith by which we can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. The enemy of our soul wants to destroy our life but God; He is a shield around me the glory and the lifter of my head. This is the way David said it in Psalm 3:3.
The remainder of the verse tells us of God’s giving nature. He gives us honour, favour and good things! God is love and God is good. He pours out His bounty. James 1:17 says that every good and perfect gift comes down from the father of light.
The statement, which often glitches in people, is: "for those whose walk is blameless". The accuser of the brethren will speak to you of the unkind words you spoke or the ungodly way you acted. Praise God we have the son of righteousness that took all our sin and all our guilt upon Himself that we no longer have to work out our salvation and work for our righteousness. Jesus is our righteousness. By grace we have been saved through faith. This is not of our own but this too is a gift from God! (Ephesians 2: 8-9) When we blow it we can go to the throne of grace and we will find mercy and grace in our time of need. We have an advocate in Christ. We are righteous before the Father because of the finished work of Jesus Christ. Stand in that and receive the blessings that flow from above.
Prayer: “Father I thank you that you are my sun and shield. Keep me from all evil and shine your light in, on and through my life. Bless me with favour, honour and every good thing that flows from your throne. In Jesus might name. Amen!”
