Psalm 122:1 I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD."
As part of the songs of ascent this psalm is also spoken out as the men returned to Jerusalem three times a year to worship the Lord. The whole psalm is about Jerusalem because it was the place where they worshipped God. His Presence abode above the Mercy Seat shielded by the Cherubim in the Most Holy Place. Today we don’t have to go to Jerusalem but we do get to go to church to worship the Lord.
The author rejoiced when he was invited by others to go to the house of the Lord. Rejoice means to feel great joy or delight. Joy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. How lovely is that? There is joy in the presence of the Lord according to Psalm 16 verse 11. We also know that the joy of the Lord is our strength according to Nehemiah 8.
Paul says in Hebrews 10:25 “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” Meeting together to worship the Lord encourages us. There is strength in numbers and a release of faith and hope. Paul also says let’s spur one another on towards love and good deeds.
Some times dealing with people in the church can be deeply disappointing. Many people have left fellowship offended and hurt by other believers. The problem with that is we face all kinds of trials and tribulations alone. We truly do need one another for the sake of our faith. When we worship together our hope, our faith and our love soar. When we don’t we are subject to hopelessness, despair and unbelief. If we aren’t going up to the house of the Lord where will we find our strength and our joy?
If we are going up to the house of the Lord to worship, let’s invite others to come with us. Let’s invite our brothers and sisters. If they are reluctant, ask why and help them get over whatever is holding them back. Luke 6 and verse 37 says forgive and you will be forgiven. Don’t let a wrong by someone else keep you isolated from your Heavenly Father. Forgive them and join in the ascent to the house of the Lord.
Prayer: “Lord, show me those I should invite to the house of the Lord. Help me to be an encouragement to them and to show them your love in Jesus’ name.”
