Psalm 127:1 Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain.
‘Unless the Lord…’ we are in trouble. Have you ever convinced yourself that your plan is the Lord’s only to find out it wasn’t His? Our success, our prosperity are so contingent upon the phrase ‘unless the Lord’. It doesn’t matter whether you are building a church or a condominium complex. Unless the Lord is with you your efforts will be largely in vain.
This is also a huge blessing for us as the onus is on Him not us. If we have heard the Lord say He would like you to do something, you can be assured of its success. I tried planting one church that was a good idea encouraged by a mature leader in the body of Christ. It was a disaster. But when I attempted my second church plant, I knew God was in it. We followed His instructions even though they didn’t fit the church planters’ handbook’s preferred model. We had been going 4 months but had not really grown numerically. The consensus within our group was something was missing. We had been doing home groups with the intent of building up our numbers before we started Sunday mornings. Our sense in prayer was the Lord was saying start on Sunday mornings.
So contrary to wisdom we rented a hall, did a couple of practise Sundays, and then, invited everyone we knew to attend our inaugural meeting. We had 108 people come. That was great but we knew it was only for one special meeting that they came. But the next Sunday 60 adults came doubling our number, many who had not been to the inaugural meeting the week before.
Many times there would be situations that seemed urgent and very important, needing to be resolved. Bonnie would ask me what I was going to do. I told her, “nothing”. If the Lord wasn’t building the house, it didn’t matter what I did. And if He was building the house, He could solve the problem. Over and over again He intervened and supernaturally resolved the problems.
Too often we start with His inspiration and initial blessing only to cut Him out of the partnership as we go along. Once we start labouring on our own, all our work is in vain. Who wants that?
Prayer: “Father, show me if I am working on the right building or if I am labouring in vain? If I’m on the wrong ladder to success, show me where I have gone wrong and redirect my path? If I’m in the right place but have cut You out of the picture, please forgive me. I repent and ask You to bless me and build with me once again.”
