Psalm 129:8 May those who pass by not say to them, " The blessing of the Lord be upon you; we bless you in the name of the Lord."
The psalmist is speaking of the love - hate relationship for Zion. Why is this such a strong statement? Why are we told not to speak the blessing of the Lord to be upon them?
The Israelites were well acquainted with the power that is in the spoken word. Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has power of life and death. With our words we bless or give life or curse or speak death. When you speak death you empower someone or something to fail. Jesus cursed the fig tree and the next day it was withered from the root. We have that same ability in our mouths.
Proverbs 11:9 says with their mouths the godless destroys their neighbors but through knowledge the righteous escape. We have the power to destroy within our mouths. Our nine-year-old granddaughter made a declaration this summer. While pointing to her mouth she said, "this is my secret weapon!" Out of the mouths of babes! With our secret weapon we have the power to bless or curse.
The interesting thing is that Jesus said to bless those who curse us. Until Jesus the law taught an eye for an eye but we are told there is a higher way, the way of love. Love forgives, restores and blesses. When as Christians we say I bless you in the name of the Lord then we know we have moved in the spirit and not in our flesh.
However, we need to be aware of the enemy’s schemes. Words do have power and the ability to affect us. The end of Proverbs 11:9 says the righteous have knowledge to escape and Hosea 4:6 also says that my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. So what do we do when people speak words that are full of failure and death and not life and blessing?
Isaiah 54:17 says that no weapon formed against you will prosper and you will refute every word spoken against you in judgment. We need to break the power of every curse (or evil word) spoken against you and tear it down. You may need to forgive the person who released them and then speak blessing. Bless yourself and bless the other person. Say, may the blessing of the Lord be upon you. Use the power that is in you mouth to bless people, to tear down the works of the enemy and to release the Kingdom of God here on earth as it is in heaven.
Prayer: “Father I thank you for my secret weapon. I ask that you would put a guard watch over my mouth that I would bless and not curse. I break the power of every word formed against me and I ask that you would forgive me for words that I have spoken that have not been a blessing. In Jesus name, amen.”
