Psalm 145:8&9 The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; He has compassion on all He has made.
This is the basis of the good news and thus the heart of the Father. God is good, all the time; God is good! There are four characteristics that David speaks of in these verses that express who God is. When we know whom someone is then we know what to expect. When we know what we can expect, then we can trust and walk in faith.
The goodness of God is expressed through love, graciousness, and compassion as He is slow to anger. 1 John 16 says that we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God and God in them. The love of God is manifest to us in the face of Jesus. He took all of our sin, punishment, grief, sorrow, pain, disease and debt. In exchange for all that we get freedom, healing and eternal life.
God’s graciousness shows us His mercy and kindness. We are saved by grace through faith. This Ephesians tells us, is not of ourselves but is a gift from God. In other words, we can never work to earn our salvation. Our works will never impress God. It was out of His kindness and great love that our Savior appeared and drew us to Himself. John 6:44 says that no man comes to the me (Jesus) unless the Father draws him.
God is full of compassion and slow to anger. We can grow weary of people's behavior and demands but Jesus never tires from moving to heal and deliver. He is not surprised by sin for he knows our humanity and our frailties. He continues to work on our behalf calling us to repentance that we might experience His great love not wrath.
If we could but see that God is good all the time we would not hesitate to approach the throne room of grace in our time of need. We need revelation that God knows how we are made, He knows every thought we have and every word we speak yet He loves us unconditionally. The next time you need mercy and grace run to Him for He is waiting patiently with arms wide open and He will receive you!
Prayer: “Father I thank you for your wonderful love. I come to you in Jesus’ mighty name and I ask that you would reveal your goodness and kindness to me afresh. Establish and root me in the depths of your love in Jesus name. Amen”
