Psalm 16:1 Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge.
Psalms 14 – 16 present the dilemma of mankind. Psalm 14 says all are corrupt; hence, a need for a Saviour. Psalm 15 answers the inquirer’s question as to the route into God’s presence. It is by fulfilling the law but we know from Psalm 14 that can’t be done for no one does good. So we are stuck unless there is another way.
Psalm 16 says there is. Verse one tells us to take refuge in God. It is the only way. The problem with mankind is we either choose to stay in our corruptness, mocking God, or we struggle to find righteousness through our own self-will. Neither way is the pathway to righteousness. Psalm 14 does say God is present in the company of the righteous as our hope. But that righteousness comes only through Jesus who said He is the way, the truth and the life.
Once we stop struggling and start seeking a place of refuge in God we are blessed. Verse 2 says: "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." It isn’t about us “doing good”, it’s about us embracing the good thing. We need to embrace Him. It isn’t works that save us but faith that does.
When we come into that rest in Him, the benefits are huge. Psalm 16 tells us that we have an assigned portion, security, pleasant places, a delightful inheritance, counsel in our sleep, stability, rest, resurrected life, joy in His presence and eternal pleasures. Wow! Blessings here and now and throughout eternity!
No wonder Jesus said: "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (Mark 10: 14, 15) Little children do not work for their daily bread, they do not worry about finances, and they expect to have a roof over their heads and parents who care for their every need. They have no concept of working to please their parents. They simply receive all that their parents have for them.
Psalm 16 encourages us to find our refuge in Him. Just as a little child will tuck in closely to their Mommy or Daddy when they are feeling a wee bit insecure, we need to do the same with our Heavenly Father. Amen!
Prayer: Father, thank you that you have provided the means for me to be saved and in close relationship with you. Through Jesus and his sacrifice I can receive faith and all your blessings now and throughout eternity. Amen!
