“I pursued my enemies and overtook them; I did not turn back till they were destroyed.” (Verse 37)
In part one of this psalm’s devotional the relevant point was the distress, which David felt, followed by his calls to God and God’s deliverance of him from his enemies. David says He rescued me - He is my support. As you continue to read David begins around verse 32 to talk about the Lord arming him for battle. Then from verse 37 he shares how he, David, set his enemies to flight.
The sequence was firstly God’s response to David’s prayers, secondly the Lord preparing David for battle and thirdly David taking the army to war and defeating his enemies. All three are part of overcoming the battle around you.
The Lord said in Isaiah 65:24: “Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear.” He is immediately heedful of our prayers. Exactly like David’s description He answers our prayers in the heavenly realm first. Jesus said to the disciples in Matthew 16:19: “"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." (NAS) He is saying that what you pray on earth will be responded to in heaven. We don’t fight just an earthly battle. There is a heavenly realm that needs to be shifted first.
Once something is bound or loosed through prayer the next step is to prepare for action. David took the army to war and saw the Lord’s hand upon them. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 16:9 that there is a door of effectual service open for him but to pray for him as there are many who oppose him. Doors of service may be open to us but we need to acquire prayer to be truly effective. After the resurrection of Christ the apostles went daily to pray and subsequently saw signs, wonders and miracles. Mark 16 verse 20 says: “Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.”
David learned that prayer is essential to our victory here on earth. He will move the heavens for us so we can move the earth.
Prayer: "Quicken my mind how to pray in the spirit for discernment to bind and loose. Let me know your deliverance before I go up and wage battle in the natural realm. Thank you that the battle truly is yours and I reap the results. In Jesus name!"
