Psalm 19:2,3 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Without a word creation speaks of our creator and Lord. Passing through Cathedral Grove, a stand of old growth firs and cedars on Vancouver Island, I was overwhelmed with awe for my Lord and Savior. The magnificence of snow covered mountain peaks framed by fertile farmland shouts His name. Words are insufficient to describe His majesty. Their voice does not need to be heard to sing His praises and knowledge of Him.
What David describes sounds very much like St. Francis of Assisi’s famous quote: “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words”. Communication is so much more than words. How we live our life speaks volumes to those who don’t know God. Sometimes our words are betrayed by our actions. We talk of a God of love and then criticize our spouse or friends, passing value judgments upon their actions.
Paul echoes David’s sentiments towards God and creation in the book of Romans. He said: “For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse”. As a child I marveled at the world around me. I loved to study nature, collecting any kind of nature cards or offerings that were available. As I got older and involved in the dynamics of the adult world I lost that curiosity and awe. My senses were dulled. When I became born again, it was as if a veil was pulled off my eyes. The beauty surrounding me astounded me. The joy of trees budding in spring, the flowers blooming, the scenery all reminded me of His goodness.
Jesus said in Luke 10:23-24: "Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it." Our eyes need to be opened to see our Lord and Savior just as my eyes were to His glory in creation. My joy in His divine creation reminds me constantly of how big, how marvelous, how loving My God is. When circumstances seem overwhelming, if we lift up our eyes to the hills, we will see the victory is ours through our Lord.
Prayer: Lord open my eyes to see the magnificence of your creation and the amazing power that brought it all into being. Let me rejoice that You surround me with Your love and care. Amen.
