Psalm 36: 7 “How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.”
It is amazing how often the psalms emphasize the Lord’s unfailing love. Often I hear people dividing between the Old and the New Testament on the basis of law and love. As Jesus is the fulfillment of the law these people seem to feel that the Old Testament is irrelevant as it is all judgment and legalism. But the New Testament is about a loving God. How can this be?
It would seem impossible for God to have such a radical change in His nature. He does say I, the Lord, do not change in Malachi 3. He is love. He loves in the Old Testament as in the New. He does not and has not changed.
But David rightfully perceives that the wicked have no fear of God and flatters himself so much that he can’t detect or hate his sin. There is a veil of darkness that comes over their mind. They call evil good and good evil (Is. 5:20). They are deceived and practice deceit. The righteous cannot appease them. They will accuse the Lord or his people of being judgmental and not loving. When we defend the Lord as all loving and merciful by our words and deeds, they accuse us of serving a God who is unfit to worship, as He has no standards worthy of dying for. We cannot argue people into the kingdom of God. Only revelation of His unfailing love will open their hearts to Him.
Psalm 36 verse 9 says: “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light”. He is the source of life to those who believe. But we need the light of His unfailing love to shine upon us for us to see light. Jesus said in John 6 verse 44: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day”. Oh, how we all need the unfailing love of the Father to draw us to Christ! Only then will we find refuge in the shadow of His wings.
Prayer: “Father, I thank you that you have drawn me to Christ and that in him I will be raised up at the last day. Thank you that your light shines upon me and now I see. I pray for those (who you may name) to also be blessed by your unfailing, drawing love. In Jesus name, amen!”
