Psalm 37:37 - 38 “Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace. But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off.”
This psalm starts with an admonition to “not fret because of evil men or be envious of those who do wrong”. (Verse 1) At times it can appear that the unrighteous are better off than the righteous. This is especially hard to take when you are persevering through a trial or test and you look at the unbelievers who are prospering and apparently living a life of complete bliss. Verse 1 says not to envy them. Whatever we are going through is for our own good, lasts for but a short season and is a sign of being a child of God as the Lord only disciples those who are His children.
Have you ever felt that way? I know I have looked at those who aren’t following the Lord and their lives have appeared to be ones of very smooth sailing. But the psalmist says in verse 37 that there is a future for us, the people of peace. Verse 38 says the unrighteous do not have a future. It is true. Even in verse 35 and 36 the author says he has seen the wicked flourishing but after a time when he looked for them he could not find them. In verse 9 he says: “those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land”.
We need to keep our eyes on verse 37, which says there is a future for the man of peace. If we set our eyes on the prosperity of the wicked we could be drawn into a trap like Hymenaeus and Alexander. Paul wrote to Timothy of them saying: “my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you, so that by following them you may fight the good fight, holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith”. (1 Timothy 1:18, 19)
To stay the course to our inheritance we need to fight the good fight of faith and be obedient to our conscience. The sinner will not flourish. Be careful not to envy something that is so fleeting.
Prayer: “Lord, I will set my eyes on you and delight in you for you will give me the desires of my heart. I know that your heart is to bless me, that I have an inheritance in you and that I have peace and a future in you. Help me to fight the good fight of faith by abiding in you. Amen.”
