Psalm 42:5. Why my soul are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me?
In three verses of psalm 42 the psalmist asks his soul why it is so downcast. So what does a down cast soul look like? The word downcast means despondent or low in spirit. It would have an out working of depression, weepiness and discouragement. Most people are not downcast without a reason. Something has happened to cause their soul to be disturbed.
Disturbed is a strong word. When someone says that a person is disturbed they most likely are unhappy, have emotional stress and mental illness. But here, rather than sitting and stewing in depression, the psalmist is doing something about those toxic emotions.
The first thing the psalmist does is speak to his soul and command it to trust in God. When we put our trust in someone other than The Lord, they will fail. People cannot meet your expectations and your needs, only God can. That is why our hope has to be in Him.
The next thing the psalmist does is begin to praise God. Praise lifts our eyes off our own situation and puts them on the one that can change our circumstances. God is in control and praise reminds us of who He is and how good He is to His children.
The last secret the psalmist uses is that of remembrance. We need to recount the goodness of God to ourselves to build faith. When we think of what He has done for us in the past it builds and releases faith. It inspires and hope is Infused into our soul.
Prayer. “Father I thank you for your goodness. I thank you that you have done great things in my life and you will do them again. I praise you for you are good and your love never fails.”
