Psalm 53:1 “The fool says in his heart, "There is no God"”.
In Matthew 5:22 Jesus says that if you say to a person you fool, you are in danger of the fire of hell! That is steep! A fool is defined in Hebrew is one that is stupid, wicked or vile. The root is to fall away or to wilt. The rest of the verse goes on to describe the fool’s behavior. It states they are corrupt, their ways are vile and they do no good!
Notice that it is in the fool’s heart that they declare there is no God. Romans 10:10 says that it is with the heart that we believe unto righteousness and with the mouth you confess and are saved. Notice the first act of salvation takes place in the heart, for out of the abundance of the heart your mouth speaks.
In Romans chapter one it is clear that God has revealed himself to mankind since the creation of the world by His eternal power and his divine nature. Although man knew God they chose not to give Him thanks or glorify Him. Therefore, their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were hardened. There it is again. Their foolish hearts!
When our hearts become hardened, we are given over to what the heart desires and we exchange truth for a lie. Jeremiah 17:9 says the heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure! There is only one that can change a heart and that is God. David said in Psalm 51 create in me a pure heart oh God. When a person says there is no God we need to ask God to open the eyes of their heart that they would see and receive a gift of repentance that leads to life!
Prayer: “Father I pray that you would keep my heart from deception and create in me a pure heart. Open the eyes of my heart that I would see you more and more.”
