Psalm 54:4 Surely God is my help: The Lord is the one who sustains me.
I remember an old song by the Beatles that said, "Help me if you can I'm feeling down...won't you please, please, help me, help me help me!" The words "if you can" are not what you want to be thinking when you are in need. David in this psalm says surely God will help me. In other words, God will without a doubt come to my aid. He is fully persuaded, confident and assured that the only one that can help, will do it! That assurance is confidence and is called faith! Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things not seen according to Hebrews 11. We can have faith that God is for us, with us and will help us in our time of need.
James says don't be surprised when you face trials of many kinds. This is not my favorite portion of scripture. I prefer life easy, free and without pain. Who doesn’t? But I also know what it is to have trials of various kinds. In the midst of a storm there is one who sustains. The word, sustain, means to strengthen and support physically or mentally. The Lord is our comfort, encouragement, strength, and our support. In fact, he is the one who carries us, empowers us and supplies all our needs!
In Mark 4:39-41 we see the disciples in a boat being swamped by the wind and waves. In their eyes and minds their very lives were on the line. But Jesus was in the boat asleep! They went to him and woke him up saying don't you care that we are going to drown? He got up, spoke to the elements and instantly the situation was calm! He then said to the disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" You see with God all things are possible! We can have the confidence to say, just like David; surely, God will help me!
Prayer: “Father, I thank you that you are my helper. In you I trust. I ask that you would meet my every need and strengthen me in my, body, soul and spirit. In Jesus name. Amen!”
