Psalm 97:11, 12 “Light is shed upon the righteous and joy on the upright in heart. Rejoice in the LORD, you who are righteous, and praise his holy name.”
The first few verses of this psalm are reminiscent of the Lord’s appearance to the Israelites at Mount Sinai after their deliverance from Egypt. Exodus 19 describes what they encountered. “Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently.” (Verses 17 and 18) It was terrifying and they trembled with fear. In fact they begged Moses to “speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die”. (Ex. 20:19)
To see this sight and to hear His voice filled the people with fear. They didn’t know their position in God as His chosen people. They were far more aware of their inability to please Him out of their flesh than they were of His righteousness and justice, which are the foundations of His throne. If we compare ourselves to His holiness, we fall well short of it. But our relationship is not about our efforts and holiness. It’s about His imparted righteousness to us because He has chosen us. He chose the Israelites not because of anything they had done and He has chosen us the same way. His son’s sacrifice fulfilled all requirements of the law to make it possible for Him to choose us all. The word says it is His will that none of us should perish. (2 Peter 3:9)
Our highlighted scripture says light is shed upon the righteous. John 1:4 says: “In him was life, and that life was the light of men.” Him is Jesus. In John 15:16 Jesus said: “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit--fruit that will last.” I chose you. We didn’t find Jesus, He found us. Our righteousness is imputed to us when we believe in Him. As a result we walk in the light as He is in the light. Joy fills our heart. We have nothing to fear as we are in Him – chosen by Him.
Prayer: “Father, thank you that I am in and you are in me. Your life fills me and I am righteous. I have joy not fear for the light of God is shed upon me. Amen.”
